Rubik's Cube Notation
There are six sides to the Rubik's cube and they all have different names represented by letters. So we have got:
- U for Upper
- D for Down
- F for Front
- B for Back
- L for Left
- R for Right
We use these letters to describe the rotation on the cube. And the combination of these letters makes an algorithm, which must be executed from left to right. Each letter simply tells you to move that face clockwise by 90 degrees. An apostrophe after a letter (like R', said 'anti-right') tells you to move that face anticlockwise instead, and 2 after a letter (like B2) tells you to move that face by 180 degrees.
Now let's take an example:
If you take your cube and do this algorithm: R2 L2 U2 D2 F2 B2
Then your cube will end up having a beautiful checkerboard pattern on it. Something like this:
Congratulations!!!
Now you know how to read notations and implement an algorithm. If you are a beginner then these notations are enough to learn the beginner's method and basic CFOP method. But there are more complex notations like wide moves and middle layers for speedcubers. You can learn these advanced notations here.
